Karlstad is situated between Stockholm and Oslo, where the Klarälven River flows into Lake Vänern from the north. Being the seat of the Värmland county government, Karlstad is the centre of the entire region. The municipality of Karlstad has approximately 84,000 inhabitants, but the greater Karlstad area, including four adjacent municipalities, is the home of some 130,000 people.
A city of events
Karlstad is a lovely city to visit. There are several concerts every week, and performances by world artists are frequent in Löfbergs Lila Arena. Färjestad BK is one of the country’s best ice hockey teams, and IF Göta arranges annual competitions for the Swedish track and field elite. If you want to experience something really exhilarating, be sure to visit Karlstad during the Swedish Rally.
A university city
Karlstad University, with more than 10,000 students, is one of the most modern universities in Sweden. The main county hospital is located in Karlstad, and the city also accommodates national public authorities such as the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency and the Swedish Consumer Agency.
Shopping
There are many shopping opportunities in Karlstad. The flourishing city centre has small boutiques, outdoor cafés and a new multi-storey indoor shopping centre. Only five minutes by car from downtown Karlstad, the Bergvik mall complex offers free parking and one of Sweden’s largest shopping areas, including IKEA, supermarkets, electronics retailers, clothes stores and much more.
World-leading industry
Karlstad is a world leader when it comes to pulp, packaging and paper. Forest industry cluster “The Paper Province” has about 250 member companies developing innovative products and services in fields such as packaging design and energy efficiency. There are also a large number of companies in the service sector, notably media and communication businesses.
The city of the sun
In Karlstad, you will see the sun shining everywhere even on cloudy days. Not only because the smiling sun is its symbol – we can also offer a unique, friendly atmosphere, a positive working climate, an easygoing and informal tone of communication and openness to co-operation. Just ask any Swede what he or she associates with Karlstad, and the answer you are most likely to get is: “sola” – the sun!
