Karlstad is geographically located between Stockholm and Oslo, where the river Klarälven meets the northern shore of Lake Vänern. The municipality of Karlstad has approximately 84.000 inhabitants. Karlstad is the seat of the county government in Värmland and holds services directed to the entire Karlstad region. The closer region is composed of Karlstad and four other municipalities in the neighbourhood, altogether forming a greater Karlstad area with about 130.000 inhabitants.
The University City
One of the most modern universities in Sweden is situated in Karlstad. More than 10.000 students study at the Karlstad University in academic programmes. The main county hospital is situated in Karlstad and the city is also the seat of national public authorities such as the Swedish Rescue Services Agency and the Swedish Consumer Agency.
A popular city to visit
Karlstad is a lovely city to visit. There are several concerts to attend every week and world artists perform in Löfbergs Lila Arena several times a year. The ice hockey team Färjestad BK plays thrilling hockey games and IF Göta arranges annual athletic competitions with the Swedish sporting elite. And if you want to experience something really exhilarating you should visit Karlstad during the Swedish Rally.

Shopping
There are many shopping opportunities in Karlstad. The flourishing city centre has small boutiques, outdoor cafeterias and a new shopping centre called ”Mitt i City”. If you want to shop outside the city centre you can go to Bergvik. Bergvik is one of Sweden’s largest external shopping areas and it includes for example IKEA and several grocery shops.
World leading
Karlstad has a world leading competence when it comes to pulp, packaging and paper. The forest industry cluster “the Paper Province” has about 250 member companies and they develop innovative products and service in areas such as packaging design and energy efficiency. There are also a large number of companies in the service sector with many media- and communication businesses.
A happy sun
The nearness to the sun and the fresh water create an unique atmosphere in Karlstad. There is a positive working climate, he tone of communication is informal and we like
co operations. Furthermore, Karlstad is the only municipality in Sweden which has a happy sun as its symbol - a sun that is created by an children's books illustrator. In the centre of the city you find the statue of “Sola”. The statue recalls the memory of a joyful woman who owned an inn in the 18th century, and who gave the sunshine a human face.
